Summary
Another summer field camp in the Eastern Sierra is officially in the books! Each year, students in EART 189B – Summer Field Camp spend weeks immersed in the geologic wonders of the Poleta Fold Belt, deep in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. It’s not just about mapping complex structures or mastering field techniques—this experience is a rite of passage for aspiring geologists.
For many, it’s the culmination of their undergraduate journey. For all, it’s a launchpad into what comes next—whether that’s graduate school, industry, environmental work, or beyond. Field camp challenges students to think critically, collaborate, problem-solve in real time, and most of all, to see the Earth through a new lens.
We’re proud to say UCSC hosts one of the top summer field geology programs in the nation, and it’s thanks in no small part to the Gerald Weber and Suzanne Holt Fund, which ensures this transformational experience is accessible to more students. (eps.ucsc.edu/support-us/wh)
To our newest field geologists: congratulations! You’ve earned your stripes—both literally and geologically.
